Shannon McGinty’s contextual practice work, The Trans* Generosity Project, a pop up interactive resource center and community quilting project, invites members invites members of the community into a space created for research, the dissemination of information, community building, and quilting. McGinty uses the creative process as a tool to initiate dialogue regarding LGBTQ+ identities, experiences, and activism, while producing a socially collaborative community quilt. Before the opening of the pop-up space, McGinty hosted a series of quilting bees with LGBTQ+ students, organizations, alliances, and transgender support groups. McGinty has learned, through the initiation of conversations and connections, the exchanging of stories and experiences, and community building, that, “people start to heal the moment that they feel heard.”
